Why does AI cite my competitor and not me?

Almost always because more independent sources describe them than describe you, not because their website is better. Citation follows corroboration. Where you rank well on Google but are never cited, the cause is usually structure — the page does not contain a passage that can be lifted and attributed.

Diagnosing which of the two it is

Cross-reference against your Google rankings. Where you rank well but are never cited, the issue is extractability: the answer is buried, the sections depend on each other, or the page states positioning rather than specifics.

Where you rank poorly and are never cited, the issue is authority — and that is the same fix it has always been. Links and mentions from sources that are already trusted on the subject.

The pages being cited are often not anyone's website

When someone asks a model for the best provider in a category, the answer is frequently assembled from comparison posts, industry roundups, forum threads and review sites rather than from any vendor's own pages.

That makes being present and accurately described on third-party pages a distinct piece of work from anything you can do on your own site. It is also the step most teams skip.
