Almost always because more independent sources describe them than describe you, not because their website is better. Citation follows corroboration. Yes, and arguably more than before. Retrieval systems have to choose which of a thousand pages answering a question is worth citing, and they lean on the same authority signals search engines do: who links to you, who references you, and whether the wider web treats you as credible on the subject.

Page-level fixes can change citations within weeks, because retrieval systems fetch live. Authority changes take months, because they depend on mentions accumulating across independent sources. Anyone promising a fixed timeframe is describing a system that does not behave that way.
